Rain or Shine it's still Spring Break Time

Spring break! Bleh! Rain. Rain. More rain!
A whole week with no school and so far we have gotten outside to play twice. What have we done so far?
We have built a  cardboard box tunnel to crawl in an out of. So aggravating to tape that box beast together. I must have used 5 different sized boxes and then had to renovate after Grayson was informing me that it was too small height wise for him. He wanted more roof space. More cutting and MORE tape. The kids have thoroughly enjoyed playing inside the tunnel so my efforts were worth every last little giggle and smile.

I actively follow a blog called, The Imagination Tree. I get so many  ideas for creative play from her site and then try to do in my own ways. "Try", though not as cosmetically sweet as her creations. Some, in all honestly I won't even attempt for fear of epic failure! One idea I saw was water play. A sensory experience for little ones. Now, some people have one of those neat water tables. Some people have a backyard. I have neither! So, all of my water play activities with Grayson and now with Starr have been inside on towels in the kitchen, on top of a plastic table cloth on the dining room table or in the bath tub.

I simply placed towels on the floor in the kitchen and filled a few containers with water. Plain water, added food coloring to two other dishes filled with water to make Green and Blue water. I gave them some toys and measuring cups to play with and the two of them poured, splashed, and scooped to their hearts content. When they were soaked and the towels on the floor were equally as soaked I moved the water play into the bath with a few drops of blue food coloring added to the bath just for fun!

Monday we played bubbles and Monster Trucks out back. Not really a back yard, but in the back, a community yard area with trees and grass...good enough. Grayson has this new fascination with rocks. He always wants to pick out a rock or rocks and bring it/them home. Only thing- the rock is usually the most disgustingly dirty rock that he can find. I usually allow him to bring one inside but convince him we need to wash it. Monday we did some impromptu washing experiments with his dirty rock.

First was a bowl of soapy water

Next a bowl of  plain water

Followed by a bowl with a little vinegar. After adding his rock to this bowl we added a sprinkle of baking soda and watched the fizzles. He loved this.

Last was a bowl of water mixed with green food coloring, which he enjoyed too (Green seems to be his color these days)

After dipping the rock into each bowl twice and watching, "Nothing happened Mommy!" With all bowls except the vinegar one. "Ooohhhh!" Followed by laughter after the vinegar dips. We practiced our counting skills, counting to ten for each bowl during round 1. Round two we counted to twenty.

After we did a good drying of the rock and then I let my little artist paint away.

Love the paint shirt! One of Daddy's white shirts, well was white!
At last his masterpiece was finished. What once was an old rugged and dirty rock was now clean(as clean as it could be) and painted anew!

Today, we got outside and to the Park. After an evening of rain the park was wet and soggy. Provided plenty of yucky rain water for Grayson to play in. He took his Grave Digger Monster truck and happily swooshed it back and forth in the rain puddle left on the sidewalk. He then began running and jumping in the puddle all while saying "Ewe, Yucky!" He then grabbed a few fallen palm tree branches and began to "Clean Up, Clean up...." the mucky water. After about 45 minutes of playing in the rain puddle we headed home for a bath and some inside play.

It is only Tuesday and though we have spent the majority of our time indoors, I think we are doing alright! So Spring Rain or Spring Shine Mama has this Spring Break Week covered!
