Some things you play with...Some things you don't!

Today, we played with Rainbow Rice...So much fun! Yesterday, my husband, G-Man and I made two batches of Rainbow Rice. One was for Grayson's friend, Ethan, who has been feeling under the weather lately, and the other for my G-Man. I followed the instructions per the Blog, Happy Hooligans, with the exception that I made 2 cups of each color instead of 1 cup so I added more Vinegar to accommodate. I used Food coloring instead of the Wilton Food Gels because I already had food coloring in my house. I ended up using a empty Greek Yogurt container with lid and that worked perfectly. Her link is noted but here is what I used:

What You Will Need:

White long Grain Rice (got ours at Dollar General)
Measuring Cup
Measuring Teaspoon
Vinegar
Food Coloring or Food Gel
A Container to shake things up in
Napkins
Something to put the rice on to dry (We used Styrofoam plates because I had some lying around- This worked just fine)
Ziplock Bags or some containers to store in

What We Did:

Measured two cups of rice and dumped into empty yogurt container. (Happy hooligans calls for 1 Cup)
Added generous amounts of Food Coloring (We did 20 drops each color)
Added the 1 Teaspoon of Vinegar  (Happy Hooligans did 1/2 tsp for 1 Cup of Rice)
Put lid on tight and Shake..Shake..Shake.Senora
Dump onto plate, wipe inside and lid of container with a paper towel before moving along to your next color.

I found that it didn't matter whether I stirred the food coloring first or just shook it up. Also, the rice dried within 30 mins - 1 hour. I then stored each color into a freezer Ziplock bag.

Grayson had so much fun scooping, throwing, pouring his rice all over. We used some beach toys along with an aluminum container and other odds and ends in the plastic drawer I could find. He had a blast and played for an hour. He filled up one of his Fish shaped beach toys and said, "Rainbow Fish!" He then proceeded...in his language of course..to recite the part of the book where Rainbow Fish shares his shimmery scales with the other fish! I wish I recorded it. (A great book about sharing) After he was done we vacuumed up the rice. Grayson had fun helping me do this too. He was more than happy to point out the colored rice I missed on the Kitchen floor.

Speaking of things to play with...... The last two days G-Man has been sticking his fingers in his diaper when he poops! Where is this coming from??? Yesterday, he had a real messy poo and all of a sudden comes into the Kitchen, while I was cooking dinner, and says "Ewe..Poppy Mama!" He was laughing and had poop all over his finger!!!! Then again this morning he comes to me with poop on his hand."Poopy, Mommy."
I reply calmly and say, "Yes, but we don't play with our Poopy because poopy is yucky, dirty, gross. It's healthy to go Poopy but we don't play with it!"

I am beside myself and baffled. Where is this sudden interest in his poop coming from?? We have had instances when he pulled his diaper off and poop has gotten on the floor but playing with it is a whole new level. I know it is interesting to learn what your body does and poop is smelly, squishy (sometimes hard) and warm...quite the sensory experience but playing with it.........REALLY??!
After I cleaned him this morning I asked him if he touched any of his toys when he had poop on his hands. He clearly didn't quite grasp what I was asking because as I was wiping his toy cars down he kept laughing, scrunching his nose saying, "Poopy Mama. This One." As he handed me each car one at a time!

So what I want to know is...which one of you are responsible for the Poopy?

  1. For starters, thank you for the rainbow rice and all of Ethan's (and my!) goodies. We love, love, love everything and spent all day playing with rainbow rice today too!

Second - ewwwwwwwww! Ethan did that once, and only once, took his diaper off and played in it and wiped it on the walls and his FACE (I'm guessing his mouth, but I can't even bear to think about it) and up his nose and ears and crib bars, ugh, it was so horrible. *shudder*

  2. It's the things people DON'T tell you before you become a parent that make for interesting reading. Many "mommy bloggers" are too focused on sharing the attractive parts of the job. Thanks for sharing! (And yes, I think it's pretty normal for toddlers to go through a poop-as-Play-Doh phase.)
